Highmoor was spelled Highmore until about 1950.
This, the first Census taken in England, is a very simple one and gives few details. It is also very difficult to read!
This Census was taken before the building of the Church (1859) and the sinking of the Well (1865).
There were 60 properties, with 140 males and 160 females (children included). Total population was 300.
Few people were born outside the parish. One, Walter Mintoff?, is marked S for Scotland.
Emma & John Frewin, son & daughter of a publican, who may have managed 'The Green Man' (see Highmoor: Pubs file) were twins.
Sarah & Emma Allum and Lucy & Richard Allum, at Highmore Cross appear to be two sets of twins.
The School was a Dame School on Witheridge Hill, in the original building of a house next to the Rising Sun. There were three teachers and ten pupils, almost all of whom were boarders and came from outside Oxfordshire.
Though most people were Agricultural Labourers, there were several Farmers, Shopkeepers/Grocers, Carriers, Blacksmiths, Sawyers and Carpenters, two Publicans, a Shoemaker, a Baker, and a Higler (a trader in eggs).
