Stoke Row 1 uninhabited dwelling Mr Lydales House |
This, the first Census taken in England, is a very simple one and gives few details. It is also very difficult to read!
It should be borne in mind that this Census was completed twenty-three years before the sinking of the Maharajah's Well in 1864.
The Wichelows, who developed a large pottery business, are mentioned in this Census.
The Whitticks, another old family, have twin 3-year-old girls.
Scots Common is the area as one leaves Stoke Row and enters the Checkendon Road. The slope is Dogmore End and when one comes up into what is now Checkendon, this area is what was known as Nuthatch. The Council houses there are called Nuthatch.
The uninhabited 'Mr Lydale's House' was probably the house at the start of the Reading Road, known in 2002 as 'Red Cow House', formerly known as 'Beechcroft', which was owned by Mr Lydall in 1769 - his initials appear on a brick in the wall.
There were 60 properties, with 140 males and 160 females (children included). Total population was 300.
