No 2: George Hope's mother-in-law had been born in Canada, possibly as a result of government-backed exodus earlier in the century?
No 5: Clarinda Clinch: A School Attendances & Progress Book still survives for this child. The original is in the Oxfordshire Archives and a copy will be found in the School file: Documents. It shows that Clarinda was born at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, on 25 April 1874. Her parents came from this town, but there is no mention of her having been at school there, just that she had attended Stoke Row School 178 times in 1879 and 253 times in 1889, under Miss E S Carter.
No 6: This house was called Hawthorn House, but by the 1930s it was, and still is, known as Clayhill.
No 7: 1, Henley Road: This is No 1 Rosetree Cottages.
No 8: 2, Henley Road: This is No 2 Rosetree Cottages.
No 9: This is 'Laurel Cottage' and No 10 was the other semi-detached half, known then as 'Bay Tree Cottage'. Note that the Enumerator called when their baby was just one day old! However, her parents had already decided on the name of Amy.
No 11, Henley Road: Today known as 'Clare Cottage'.
No 11: 6 Newland Lane: Today this house is known as Little Langford, it used to be called Evergreen, because the Green family lived there after this time.
No 25: 1 Newland Lane was the Forge, now known as 'Cherry Tree Cottage'.
No 26: 5, The Green, Joseph Rogers, Boot & Shoe Maker. This was later Lambourne's Bakery on the corner of the Village Green. Mr Cecil Lambourne told me this.
No 30: 'Alma Cottage' was on a piece of land on which 'Church (Chapel) House' and the houses in Alma Green now stand. The cottage was named after the Battle of the Alma, Crimea, 1854 and was probably built about then. Robert Hewitt, who may have been related to the Well Keeper, was a 'Sheep Dipper and Baker' - one hopes his two trades did not get mixed up!
No 32: Knottley Wood Lane - now known as Nottwood Lane.
No 39 onwards: still this was called Knottley Wood Lane by the Enumerator, but at this point it becomes known today as Busgrove Lane.
No 51: This lady is listed as a Professor of Music - rare for a woman to have a profession - what was she doing in Stoke Row?
No 54: Mr Voss lived at The Grove and started the growing of lilies - in the end this became a thriving Nursery Garden, under the care of the Townsend family, who sent lilies by the thousand to the London markets. The maid at The Grove is listed as Ada Wakefield, only 14 years of age, birthplace unknown - it may be that she came from the Henley Union Workhouse.
No 55: Well Cottage: Mr Robert Hewitt is listed as a Blacksmith, but he was also the Wellkeeper.
Nos 58/59: Woodside - at end of now called School Lane.
No 60: Carpenter's Shop: This house became known as 'The Rest'. In the 1980s it was renamed 'Bodgers' and today is known as 'Virginia Cottage'. The owner in 1881 was the famous Mr James Cox, who was a pillar of the Stoke Row Chapel, had a large family, mainly girls, and a considerable building and carpentry business, which included undertaking (funeral services).
No 61: It is difficult to read the name of this house, especially on the photocopy sent to me, but it may be 'Barmuda House' which was mentioned in the 1861 census but not in the 1871.
No 71: 'Dogmore End House', this is now known as 'Bassett Manor'. In 1881 it was a very considerable private boarding school, with 29 boarders! Mr and Mr Morris also educated their own children. They may have had a number of daily staff but the only ones who lived in were a Cook and a Housemaid and they were both only 17! It is probable that many of the children's parents were out in India, which was not considered safe for young children at that time. However, 5 and 6 years of age does seem dreadfully early for a child to be separated from its parents!
No 74: Burncote Lane - this was a beer house, at one time known as 'The Jockey' - see Stoke Row: Pubs: the Jockey. Burncote Lane ran from the Stoke RowCheckendon Road down to the 'Black Horse' public house. (see Stoke Row: Pubs: Jockey file)
There were 91 properties (though the boundaries have since been changed): 215 males, 206 females = total pop: 421 (inc 2 visitors), but less the 29 private school boarders = 392.
