The enumerator was Henry Morris, who lived at Basset Manor on the Checkendon Road and was the proprietor of a boarding school for young ladies and gentlemen.
I apologise for the number of ? marks in the foregoing pages, but I have been working from photocopies taken from microfiches of the originals and not the originals themselves.
Even by 1901, Stoke Row was not yet a Civil Parish in its own right, but part of Ipsden.
There were 88 inhabited properties: 213 males, 199 females = total pop: 412 (inc visitor and boarding pupils).
I make the following special notes:
A faggot maker in Stoke Row was one who made up bundles of kindling wood for firelighting, not a maker of food from liver!
Several of the words 'Worker' were struck through I do not know the reason.
R Greys is Rotherfield Greys, but in this Census is referred to simply as 'Greys'.
'Own a/c' (account) is what we today would call self-employed.
No mention is made of a child being a Pupil, since by this time all children went to school
No 7: Almost certainly Stag Farm, which is not listed as such in the foregoing description of the area covered.
No 14: 'The Kiln', this was probably the basis of the house now known as 'Clayhill'.
No 15: 'The Oak Inn', now a private house called 'The Oak'.
No 17: Mrs Elizabeth Compton, Milliner. This lady had a three-month-old baby and so, presumably, had only recently been widowed and left with five little girls to bring up alone! No government aid in those days!
No 18: 'Clargo' this house in Busgrove Lane is now called 'Meadowside'.
No 19: James Cox and family lived at 'The Rest', now known as 'Virginia Cottage'. James Cox was a builder and pillar of the Chapel.
No 20: James Thomas Cox and family lived at 'The Crest', diagonally opposite 'The Rest', towards Uxmoor.
No 28: Jonas Green and family lived at a house called 'Brickbats' at the top of Stoke Row Hill. Today it is known as 'Clare Cottage'.
