Notes on the Stoke Row 1901 Census

The enumerator was Henry Morris, who lived at Basset Manor on the Checkendon Road and was the proprietor of a boarding school for young ladies and gentlemen.

I apologise for the number of ? marks in the foregoing pages, but I have been working from photocopies taken from microfiches of the originals and not the originals themselves.

Even by 1901, Stoke Row was not yet a Civil Parish in its own right, but part of Ipsden.

There were 88 inhabited properties: 213 males, 199 females = total pop: 412 (inc visitor and boarding pupils).

I make the following special notes:

A faggot maker in Stoke Row was one who made up bundles of kindling wood for firelighting, not a maker of food from liver!

Several of the words 'Worker' were struck through – I do not know the reason.

R Greys is Rotherfield Greys, but in this Census is referred to simply as 'Greys'.

'Own a/c' (account) is what we today would call self-employed.

No mention is made of a child being a Pupil, since by this time all children went to school

No 7: Almost certainly Stag Farm, which is not listed as such in the foregoing description of the area covered.

No 14: 'The Kiln', this was probably the basis of the house now known as 'Clayhill'.

No 15: 'The Oak Inn', now a private house called 'The Oak'.

No 17: Mrs Elizabeth Compton, Milliner.  This lady had a three-month-old baby and so, presumably, had only recently been widowed and left with five little girls to bring up alone!  No government aid in those days!

No 18: 'Clargo' – this house in Busgrove Lane is now called 'Meadowside'.

No 19: James Cox and family lived at 'The Rest', now known as 'Virginia Cottage'.  James Cox was a builder and pillar of the Chapel.

No 20: James Thomas Cox and family lived at 'The Crest', diagonally opposite 'The Rest', towards Uxmoor.

No 28: Jonas Green and family lived at a house called 'Brickbats' at the top of Stoke Row Hill.  Today it is known as 'Clare Cottage'.

No 36: 'The Pheasantrie' – wheabouts unknown.  It is interesting to note that the wife and her sister came from New York, USA.  A greater difference of surroundings would be hard to imagine!

No 38: Robert Hewitt was the Wellkeeper, so this was very likely to have been the Wellkeeper's Cottage, next to the Well.

No 43: Francis Hillier, Baker: This was almost certainly the bakery in the former pub, known as 'The Jockey' at Dogmore End.  Today it has been rebuilt as a private house, known as 'Berncote'.

No 44: William Higgs was a woodman, who felled timber.  See photo of him in SR Woods file.  A group with an ancient tractor, hauling out tree trunks.  He is the little old man with the beard.

No 62: 'The Salt Box' – this house is at Ipsden Heath, part of Stoke Row to the extreme west.

Mo 63: This was almost certainly the School House, adjacent to Stoke Row School.

No 64: This was almost certainly the 'Crooked Billet' public house.

No 65: This was almost certainly the Police House on the Green, today known as 'Coggins Cottage' after the late police Sgt Coggins.

No 67: This was almost certainly the London House Stores, today a private house known as 'London House'.

No 84: 'Nuthatch' is now a row of houses on the left-hand side at the top of the rise as you enter Checkendon.

No 85: 'The Black Horse' public house is now also officially in the parish of Checkendon.

Angela Spencer-Harper.  March, 2004.
