Marriages at St John the Evangelist, Stoke Row, Oxon, 1849-1913

This is an unofficial register of marriages conducted at the church of St John the Evangelist, Stoke Row, Oxfordshire, made over a period of 64 years, in an exercise book covered in marbled paper, that was lent to me by Mr & Mrs John Townsend of Stoke Row, c1985. It is thought that this little book was devised and kept by Miss Cecily Turner, niece of the wellkeeper, Mrs Whittick. Miss Turner was, for most of her life, a teacher at Stoke Row school.

Notes on the list of marriages

The dashes in some entries represent short lines in Miss Turner's write-up of this list, indicating unknown information.

The items in brackets are my own interpretations of the name of the person or place.

The youngest partner was Mary Elizabeth Crook, aged 16 (entry 67), and the eldest was John Berry, aged 72 (entry 19), who also enjoyed the largest age difference with his spouse, of 23 years.

It is interesting to note that, although there was only one wedding in 1913, there were ten in 1902, 6 in 1896 and 5 in 1891.

In earlier times weddings were sometimes held on Christmas Day and later a little before or after that day. Probably this was due to this being a time of celebration anyway and that the rest of the year people were working.
